Distillery
As you enter Pitlochry, on the right you will perhaps be tempted by the distillery where
you may take a tour and a wee dram!
The shops in Pitlochry are usually of interest to the visitor with a large selection of Scottish craft goods, fabrics and souvenirs.
Pitlochry
Dam and Fish Ladder
It's worth taking the short walk down to the hydro electric dam where you can look down
into the turbine hall then cross to the west side and enter the fish ladder viewing room
where you may see some specimen fish ascending the ladder to the uppet reaches of the
river which is now the Tummel.
Killiecrankie
About 4 miles north of Pitlochry is the Pass of Killiecrankie and it's visitor centre with
an excellent exhibition of the Battle of Killiecrankie. The battle took place on 27th July
1689 when 'Bonnie Dundee', (john Graham of Claverhouse) defeated the government troops led
by John Mackay. Famously, one
goverment
soldier made his escape under pursuit by leaping the 19 foot wide gorge at what is now
known as the 'Soldiers Leap'. This is not now recommended.
Blair Atholl Castle
Another 8 miles or so north you will find Blair Atholl Castle, the home of the only legal
private army in Scotland. The castle is open to the public and is worth a visit.
Take a short tour 2 miles north then turn west on the Loch \Tummel road where you can see
'The Queens View' which was made famous during one of Queen Victoria's visits to Scotland.
If you go at sunset you'll get some great photographs looking west to the sun reflected in
the Loch.
Queens View
Ten miles south of
Pitlochry you will find Dunkeld, a
charming little cathedral town in a lovely location. It's worth calling in there on your
way back to Callander via Perth or Aberfeldy.
Clan Donnachaidh museum
Clan Donnachaidh museum at glen tilt a bit further up the road is a must for
visitors interested in the Stewarts and the history of the clans.
